If you installed the shut off valve on the return before the boiler/Hartford loop and after the return drain valve. Then you can over fill the system with water and let it flow around flushing the return. Shut off the return back to the boiler and drain off from the return.... Fill the system slowly since you can't plug the main vent..

I have a one pipe steam system, gravity feed with a wet return. Should I flush it out now, since it is summer and the system is down ?

Should it be done annually to prevent sludge and rust in the return line ?

I can't access the main vent about two feet from the end of the main. But I can access the last radiator feed, just before the main vent.

I was thinking I could remove the last radiator and flush water down the feed into the wet return and pump the return line out as I flush it.

I have installed gate valves in the return to prevent flow back from the boiler.
Any thoughts and / or suggestions are welcomed and thanked.
