Mysterious object

in THE MAIN WALL
I believe it was either Amityville or Massapequa on south shore of Long Island. It was an older home and I was there for an addition of radiant heat. I went down to check out the boiler and tube access and saw that thingamajiggy.

    Does anyone have any info on this steam trap. It is installed at the end of the steam main in a one pipe steam system. The pipe at the bottom is connected to a wet return. Dan thinks it's a boiler return trap. Pictures attached.

    but it's unusual to find a Return Trap in a one-pipe system. They were very common in two-pipe Vapor systems.

    In the second pic, I see two main vents high on the wall and something round just to the right of them. Is that an old Mercoid pressure control?

    How about some pics of the boiler area, the area the Return Trap is in, and a few radiators? Also, have you found a name on the Return Trap? I bet it's a Sterling. There is some lettering on the end where the pipes connect to the valve arrangement, but I can't make it out from the pic.

    Where is this system located?

    that's a Lytton Vapor system. According to Lost Art, it was similar to later Trane systems I've encountered, in that it used standard main vents instead of a float trap/air eliminator. Where is it located?
