How do you tell if there is a crack in the broiler

I can't speak for all Home Warranty companies, but the policy that came with our house specifically restricted repairs to boilers, boiler accessories, radiators and radiator piping to $500.

Since we were purchasing a home with with and older boiler and original 1923 piping, we tried to find a different warranty with a better policy. We didn't find anything better. We even tried to negotiate changes to the policy with no luck. Forced air furnaces were covered much more fairly.

Hopefully you have a better company to deal with...

How do you tell if there is a crack in the boiler?

My gas usage is very high and somebody said that is there is a lot of smoke coming out of the chimney that this is an indication since I use natual gas.

    Is the smoke

white in color? If so, you probaby have a leak.

Is this a steam or hot-water system?

    Not good

    Thanks for the info.

I am in Detroit and still have a month on my home warranty so will hope that they will cover this.
  • hope the warranty

Hope the warranty will covers the boiler replacment. But make sure the replacement company is a REAL boiler pro, not just anybody that will do the cheapest job hired by the warranty company...I've walked away from job when they want it done the cheapest, not the correct way..

Got to the house and there were icecles haning down from the chimney you could barely see the roof thru the steam, found a fist size hole in the boiler, boiler was rated for 450 sq ft house needed 270.....

    Crack

Dunno, Lift it's T-Shirt? (Sorry, couldn't resist) You could isolate and pressure check the system and/or remove all access doors and panels and visually inspect.
