Does the pressure in the system fluctuate quite a bit from when the system is cold to when it is hot? Does your boiler relief valve seep? Do you have chronic problems with air in the system?

The quick way, flick the bottom half of your expansion tank with your finger and it should sound hollow. then flick the very top and it should "thud"
The real way, drain the system and check the air pressure from the schrader valve with a guage.
