    Air Vent Sizing ???

    My house was built in the late 1920s early 1930s and has a single pipe system with no air vents on the main line. I’ve been here 4 winters and have not done any maintenance (embarrassingly) during this time, other then drain and add water to the boiler.

    I had to replace a badly leaking air vent the other day. Following the chart in Home Depot I bought Maid O Mist sizes 4, 5, and 6 figuring that I’ll use them all at some point. When I got home I found that all of the radiators (11 in all) except 1 had size C and D air vents regardless of location to the boiler.

    My question is: since there is no main vent should the radiator vents be larger then the recommended size, or should I replace them all with the proper size for their distance from the boiler?

    There are two sections of the main that run in opposite direction from the boiler. Both are L shape, one is 25Ft with 5 radiators off it. The other is 30 Ft with 6 radiators. I'm guessing it's 2" pipe based on a 7.5" circumference. I will try to post some pics later.

    Yes, that's 2-inch pipe

    use two Gorton #1 or Hoffman #75 vents on each main. Let us know how much better it works.
