hartford loop

Options
Bruce, what you are thinking of is a "trap" just as a 'p' trap on plumbing waste on sewer pipe to prevent gases coming into living space.... Hartford loop was designed by Hartford boiler insurance comapny way back way they were "running out" of money paying for the boiler expolsions... The harford loop is piped to keep the water in boiler, preventing dry firing of same in case the return pipings start leaking...

    HARTFORD LOOP OR NOT?

What is the origin of the hartford loop? I mean, where was it created and its original purpose. The reason I ask is that the swimming pool industry also uses the term "hartford loop" but I don't think its a correct use of the term. The pool industry has what looks like an inverted trap in the piping to keep air or chlorine gas from travelling through the pipe when not desired. Does this mean it is a hartford loop? I don't believe so and that is why I ask. Thanks in advance for any input.
