makes a very nice adjustable radiator vent, but their main vents appear to be re-branded convector vents. They're way too small to even consider most times.

Hoffman vs Gorton

I checked the price of a Hoffman #75 for a main vent, the price was $60.00 The price of a Gorton #1 for a main vent was $16.00 why the big difference in price? Is Hoffman a better product than Gorton? Anyone care give their 2 cents?

of the Gorton, it should be the $60.00 part, not the other way around.

Gorton is our vent

of choice. 2 #1's vent a bit more than 1 #75 - for a lot fewer $. Even better is the Gorton #2. About twice the capacity of the 75.

they have totaly different construction.

the hoffman uses a volitile liquid capsule and the gorton uses a bi-metal strip..both vent close to the same..here is the difference..the hoffman will stay open in very high ambiant temperature..the gorton will start to close about 110 degrees and be closed at about 130 degrees ambiant temperature..so, the question would be..where are you putting these vents..i use both brands depending on ambiant heat..if the vent is above the boiler in the ceiling, next to a steam line..well, i'd choose the hoffman..if its just about anywhere else, i'd choose the gortons.

hoffman vs. gorton

I currently have 3 hoffman 75 vents located on the mains. There is one vent located directly behind the boiler, loks like its the return line. Should that have a hoffman 75 there?

Hoffman #75

We just replaced a Gorton#1 that failed after a few weeks of use with a new out-of-the-box Hoffman #75, the ones they don't bother to paint anymore and claim it's for our benefit. It failed first cycle. We had another older green Hoffman #75 and it worked...for now.

Ain't it a little strange? The old green 75s worked well for long periods of time. Then they stopped painting them & their service life became that of a may fly. Wonder what else they did?

Green 75 vs current

The reason Hoffman stopped painting the 75 (and others) green was for environmental reasons. The green paint was considered the brand color (much as B&G is red and M&M is black, etc). When they stopped painting them, less crap went into the atmosphere. This is considered a good thing. The construction, or the people constructing them, did not change.

Nick. Used Hoffman 75s for over 30 years. Satisfactory until the green went away. Then the failures started. 1st cycle out of the box. A day. A week. Few lasted more than a couple of months. Most were on jobs where the greens held forth for many years. Have not had problems w/ the competition's piece.

Not good when a building super shows you the broom handle he uses to tap on the shiney brass thingys to stop the steam. Or when that main won't heat because the new vent is stuck closed.

The Hoffman is an excellent vent and company as well, just not for every application. I also don't think you can beat a Hoffman "D" in certain situations. Mad Dog

Okay, here's the math

You said that one Hoffman 75's = the venting of two Gorton #1's. Double the equation on both ends and that means that two Hoffman 75's = four Gorton #1's. You also said that two Hoffman 75's = one Gorton #2. If both of your statements are correct, the venting capacity of four Gorton #1's = one Gorton #2.
