Oil return to the compressor has to do with the length and sizes of the line set and, the design of the evaporator itself.

And yes, they rely on solenoid valves on each evaporator for zoning.

    Question rehgarding mini-splits...

    I've heard that some mini split systems allow the use of multiple evaporator units on one condenser. Given that many mini-splits use variable-speed compressors, I can see how you could control the speed of the compressor to match the given load simply by trying to maintain a certain head pressure, via open-loop control, etc.

    Where I am bit confused is how the minisplits deal with getting the oil, refrigerant to and from the evaps. Do they rely on solenoid valves or similar shut off devices to prevent flow via the liquid line to disused evaps?

    Hello, another thing about the NEW mini's, is the refrigerant and oil,R-410a with P.O.E. or P.V.E. oil's.Some line set's can be very long,using NO trap's at all. The refrigerant and oil stay mixed together (miscible)even on the low side of the system, so oil return's to the comp. Uphill or downhill.
