One thing to note: Have you noticed that most OEM boiler drains now have no handle, just a screw slot?
There was an incident where a child was playing in the boiler room and kicked a conventional drain handle, which spun open and burned the child. You can see where this is going- Whatever you put on the boiler, CYA-if it's a ball valve, remove the handle and hang it somewhere out of reach.

    boiler drains

    Does anybody have an opinion on the use of a boiler drain vs. a capped and chained ball valve on a steam boiler. We normally install a 5 or 6 in. nipple then the ips c&c bv on both the bottom of the hartford loop & the lowest return tappind rather than the standard boiler dain. Does this create a place for sediment to linger or should we be better of using the old std boiler drain & do away with the nipple?

    Keep doing what you do. Don't worry about sediment. That valve makes it easy to flush it once a year. Regular boiler drains drip and leak and usually don't get touched. Sounds like you take the extra steps to do a professional job. Don't take a backward step, just keep doing what you do.
