That puppy should bust free... If you heat the brass (which is very soft) it should come off. Most put up a fight but they never win. Use 2 24" pipe wrenches or larger.

Raising a steam pipe by 1\"

Hi, we just had the floors retiled in the bathroom, which raised the height by 1". The radiator supply line is now obviously too low. When I tried to unscrew the valve to extend the length, both the valve and the pipe nipple appear to be seized.

I've tried the usual recommendations - propane torch, rust dissolving spray, etc. Nothing. I'm afraid to put too much pressure on it so not to snap the pipe.

I my next option to cut the pipe at the juncture with the valve, and then rethread the riser and take it from there?

    Careful....

This could cost you $40.00 or $400+.......If u cut it, make sure you can re-thread the new piece below, or get to it. Are you trying to crack or unloosen the union???

Initially I tried to take the 5" tall nipple off that's above the floor surface connected to a threaded union, and replace it with a taller nipple and a new vale. But both are stuck solid, even after I tried all the remdies.

There's about 1" of threading that's visible at the top of the nipple where the valve screws in. I figure I can grind the connection at the very bottom of the valve, and then continue the threads further down the nipple and attach the extender and valve on top of that. Sounds like I'm heading in the right direction.

    Not to bust your chops

Did you try to pull the pipe up the one inch you need? You might luck out. Also, search on the Wall, there was a previous thread that covered this exact same topic.

    Is there access

under where the radiator is located? If so is there any way to break the elbow (if it is an ell) and replace ell and nipple going up?

    Got it

After really really heating the valve, and using a 3' wrench, I got the valve off. Thanks for the advice.
