zone valve water hammer

Options
Try Taco 570 series zonevalves to avoid water hammer issues. The Taco 571 is a slow-closing valve, as opposed to the spring action fast closing valve.

Make sure the valves aren't installed backwards. Then look here: http://www.heatinghelp.com/newsletter.cfm?Id=137

    Is the location...

of the ZV's on the return, or the supply - immediately in front of the circulator?

If so, you may have to change them.

The probable cause is an unmatched circ. head dynamic. We tend to use wet-rotor circs. The high heads afforded when just one ZV calling can be pretty violent on closure. By choking off the circulator output via some form of throttling device, you may be able to maintain a 20 dT accross any combination of ZV "calls" - and reduce "dynamic head pressures" to a gentler factor, quieting down ZV slam and still staying around a dT of 20F.

Got isolation valves on the supply side of the circ.? (never close the suction side isolation valve (if so equipped)) - close it until you see a dT of 20 degrees on the highest head zone. You'll be amazed at how nicely things will quiet down.
