Where old radiators go to die

Options
I was surrounded by more iron and large moving machines than I cared to be and came upon this pile of history. For everyone who has recently dealt with and will deal with these individual stories, they are nothing more than brittle pieces of iron that shatter when confronted with the 1000 ton shear and compactor that awaits them. I wonder about the many families they kept warm and the homes they made toasty.

I could barely bring myself to open the pictures. Just a sec...need to wipe the tears...possibly the saddest thing I have seen since my dog died!

    Sad, truly sad

I can easily visualize a little girl standing by the purple one in her room on a cold winter's morn. If people only knew what they were missing.........most of them were probably ripped out due to simple problems with the system causing them not to heat. The system didn't heat because the current service man didn't know the ways of the dead men.

    Thanks to Dan

for making us realise the history that goes with such things. His story about the old cast iron radiator was a classic.

take a look at these old pieces of comfort

I did not want to make this into anything negative. I grew up with radiators in my house and have very fond memories. I just saw these and thought of the plain ones and the fancy ones and the different homes and businesses that they may have spent time in. The ornate radiators make me wonder about the men who designed them and the ones who installed them. All the technology we have today with radiant in floor and invisible comfort get me thinking about a lot of different things. What we take for granted and what was cherished way back when. I think we have come a long way and the artistry that was in the parlor may now be found in the boiler room.

Thanks to our Host Dan for this opportunity for all to share.

    Just my two cents worth.

    rads

We have revived many old radiators from piles just like this.

It takes a little picking to find potential candidates, and depends alot on how aggresively they got pushed off the truck.

As you notice, most don't survive:(

Then they must be tested, for the most part we have had good luck. The scrap yard would sell them to us for whatever they were getting for cast at the time.(not much)

Any leakers were sold back for the current cast price. (even less)

Felt good to bring some back.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

    Does anyone still make them??

I thought I had read that there is still one or two companies manufacturing new ones, but can't remember where I saw it or who might be doing it? Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks!
