anti freeze protection protects the Heating system. propyline glycol is the way to cruise. buying oil and having the boiler cleaned and tested and auto fill is the ticket to drop a dollar into first.

antifreeze in heating systems
I have baseboard hot water heating and i am going to be gone for the winter, tell me about putting antifreeze in my system, what are the pros and cons, and what it would cost.0 -
The pros
or "pro" would be freeze protection.
The system would need a good cleaning first. You may want to get DI water to mix it with if your water is hard. It will need a yearly check up. PH and freeze protection level. You will need to disconnect your fill system and add a LWC or glycol fill system. You may need to up size your circ pump and possibly your expansion tank. Glycol solutions will carry a bit less heat than plain water. It is expensive, and you will need an injection pump to install and purge the system.
I use it only when necessary. Snowmelts for sure, remote cabins, shop that are turned down or off, etc. Generally a home that is occupied on a daily basis should not need anti freeze protection.
