Yep, when I first inherited this system, the vents were RIGHT above the main.
I put up them as high as possible and have never had any trouble.

    fixing pitch

I'm doing some summer steam heat fixes and I wonder if any one could suggest
a better way to re-pipe this to give it better pitch. Though it doesn't look like
it, the horizontal pipe actually pitches backwards.

    Thanks,

I see u got urself in a pinch... I would put shorter nipple between the 45 els and longer horzn nipple in place

That or roll a couple of 45's

with a close nipple between; what I know as a "knuckle joint". Allows offsetting in two dimensions to accommodate imperfect angles.

    Fittings defined

Is there a good sourse (book or on-line) that defines all different types
    of pipe fittings?

If the horizontal is pitched the wrong way turn the 90 on the riser pipe facing out so you are looking into the pipe. Screw on a nipple and another 90 facing horizontal left.

Starting at the tee I would use a nipple a 45 another nipple and another 45 to make an offset riser. Use the right nipples to line this up with the horizontal 90 you left at the riser.

Continue the riser up from the last 45 with the right nipple and a 90 at the top. Put a union between the 90s and you are done.

    Before and After

Thanks for the help. Here's how it ended up. But now it's too hot
to even want to fire up the boiler to see if it works.

  • questions

Ur repiping job looks good, questions I have about ur vents on the pipe, its at the end of main and seeing the secondary vents on larger pipe, causing water to pooled in that area, vents should be back at least 15 " from end of main..
