Anode tool ?? Where to get it ??

I bought an electric impact wrench back in highschool when I was workin on my IROC, but one day I had a stubborn water heater element and happened to be close to the shop, I grabbed and that element came right out, great for anode rods, taking apart boiler sections, you'll never know when you will need it!!!!!

This one is really in there and the HWH starts turning. It was my understanding that there is a company that makes either a compound wrench or toque wrench Just for that Purpose ?

Tourque multiplier

Not sure where you can get a hold of them but they are talked about in the hot Water Heater Rescue Handbook by Larry Weingarten. He sent me some info on them but I never followed up. The torch and rather large persuader bar work nearly as well as long as you have the room as you know.

Look in the torque wrench area page 848 in my #396 cat. - $893- and there's a torque multiplier, use a 1 1/16" 3/4" drive socket impact socket on the multiplier and pull that with a normal 1/2" ratchet. If you can find a place to brace the multiplier handle/cheater pipe the anode hex head will come out or break, I've been lucky as the 50 or so I have done have all come out.

Anode removal

I use an electric impact wrench and have always been able to get even the "stubborn" ones out. Try going down to the local garage if necessary and see if they'll let you use their pnumatic one if you don't want to buy one.

Anode tools

I don't know what the manufacters use to tighten the anode rods but I would like to shove one of them anodes you know where if I ever meet the guy. I had some so tight I had to use a 3/4" impact wrench on them. Now I loosen them before installation and use never-seize on the threads and then they are real easy to remove to inspect or replace.

I always jsut used a 1/2 drive breaker bar

impact wrench does sound like a good idea. Anybody make a good battery powered one?

IIRC,

They use an impact driver to install the rod before they test the tank for leaks. Presumably, the reason the rod is tightened that much is to prevent leaks when the pressure is raised to 300psi for testing.

Having a manufacturer use never-seize on the rod before installing it would be a real nice-to-have for those of us who care about PM.
