Cold air in registers

in THE MAIN WALL
I have a gas forced air furnace and I am getting a cold breeze through the registars when the furnace is off. Only on my 1st floor. The furnace is Lennox 10 years old I just moved into the house a few months back. I have double and trippled checked all the ducting in my crawl space and all is good. The cold air inlet to the frunace I even duct taped shut and it did not help. Help we are tired of cold feet!!! Thanks

    Are you sure it's cold air and not room air temp say 68/70*? What type of house?

    It is very common in forced air systems for the house framing cavities to be used as part of the return air ducts. If these cavities are connected to the outside in some way (which is also very common) outside air will blow right into the house interior through the ductwork.

    These framing "mistakes" are called "bypasses" and need to be sealed. A home energy audit using a blower door depressurization test can pinpoint the location of the bypasses, and an insulation/air-sealing contractor can remedy the situation. Given the right information and materials, homeowners can do much of this work themselves.
