I would spend a little money and have the boiler skimmed. This will clean it so it will really work. Then as to the feeder they do stick open. Now that you are a steam owner you need to get used to looking at the gauge glass on an at least weekly basis or whenever you go in the basement. As to the lwco, you need to check to see if it drops the signal to the feeder when the correct level is reached, this will help isolate the problem.

    Problem with LWCO??

We recently moved into a house with steam heat and are trying desperately to understand our boiler. It's new -- only 1 or 2 years old -- and has an autofeed water supply. At the recommendation of a local plumbing supply store, we drained the water from the boiler. The autofeed went on after a few buckets of nasty water were emptied, but it wouldn't turn off! We didn't realize there was a problem until water started spewing out of one of the pipes. We turned the water supply off, which stopped the filling, and when we turned it back on a few hours later the autofeed (luckily) did not go back on. Now I'm just trying to figure out why it did not turn off on its own? Is it a problem with the autofeeder? Or with the LWCO? (We don't even know where the latter is located on the boiler). Any help will be much appreciated!!

Can you post some well lit photos of your boiler from various points?

If you have a conventional LWCO like a MM #67, it must be flushed PROPERLY, on a weekly basis, and disassembled & cleaned at least yearly.

Also the AWF should be cleaned on a yearly basis.

A few photos will help us see what you have, and enable us to recommend the proper maintenance intervals for your equipment.

Also, getting Dan's " We got steam heat!" book. Which will make u a more knowledgeable owner and less afraid of the system...

    LWCO & pics

I had no idea that the boiler required so much maintenance! I should be able to post pictures this evening. In the meantime, I do know that it's a 1-2 year old Crown boiler. Not sure of the model, though. And I should certainly look into getting that book...
