On the pipe spacing... The Ultra comes with the black plastic termination kit, which keeps the holes 5 inch apart as decribed by orig poster... but the Vent supplement manual ONLY shows the piping as H-R describes keeping the 12" apart rule using external PVC with dumps

What is the preferred method?

    air and exhaust penetrations

    When cutting through the exterior wall of a house for air & exhaust piping, what is the prefered location? I need to cut 2 3" holes for an Ultra install, and the easist point of access is in the void between the flooring joists right above my head. However, it means that I am running my holesaw through the rim joist (a 2X8). My only other option, as I see it, is to drill through the kitchen floor, alongside the 2" no-hub sink drain, then holesaw out through the wall, which is thinner, yet higher. Either one puts me more than 3 feet above the ground. I am just concerned with the possibility of weakening the rim joist, having 2 3" holes so close together. Any ideas? I have NO idea what happened to my post's title??

    Don't see a problem with the rim joist drilling. All the floor joists are nailed to it and so is the wall plate above. It's done all the time. Unless local codes prohibit it, go for it.

    you will need two 3-3/4" holes. 3" PVC measures 3-1/2 OD and you need a bit of space around it.

    Or one 4-3/4" hole and use a concentric vent kit.

    Typically the floor joist bear on the sill plate and the rim ties all the joist ends together. The holes should not bother the strength or bearing of the walls above.

    If you go with two holes put at least 12" between them. More if possible to prevent exhaust gas recycling.

    I always prefer through the roof venting. Not possible in your case?

    Unfortunately, I cannot get to the roof. And the reason I mentioned running the PVC close together, is that I was going to use the kit that is suposed to come with the Ultra, but not the concentric one. It showed the air and exhaust coming through the wall about 5-1/2" apart. Naturally, I cannot find that booklet right now. I know I read it and saw the illustration. What to you think? Oh, thanks for reminding me about the single hole option. Originally I had planned to run the 2 PVC lines across the basement, side by side between the beams, so I had rulled out the concentric option. Now, it might work. But I cannot penetrate too far beyond the outside wall of the house because I am coming threw in the driveway, and it's sorta tight.

    If

    If you're going with two pipes, try and hit one in one joist bay and the other in the nest one over. This give you a little latitude to get the preffered spacing. I think on any direct vent appliance you want to keep the pipes spaced no more than 12" apart.

    As always, the manufacturers recommendations supercede anything.

    Jimbo, Here's the Ultra vent supplement pdf. What you're looking for is on p.8-9. I think it's one of the more attractive terminations. I think drilling the rim joist, even at those close centers, won't affect the structure as the load is all compressive there.

    Hmmm

    I just noticed the my Vent supplement manual that came with the Ultra, DIDN't say "Series 2" [although the boiler is] and only showed the 2 pipe output installation

    Look at W.M site and see they describle the New style TermN Kit that was supplied

    Issue now is the current direct vent hole, splits the joist, right in the center and if they use the new style TermN kit, would leave a empty hole in the middle

    Wood plate the 2x10 on each side, with a 2 hole template and fill in the 3rd hole in the center? OR split the joists and go the old 2 pipe way?

    Check

    Check with W/M, but you SHOULD be able to come through where you plan, then 90 up the wall for a foot or so for the exhaust, with a 45 at the top. As a rule, as long as the warm exhaust is a foot above the intake, recirc won't be an issue.
