Hey guys, as many of you know I just started my own hydronic heating business. In my town however I am the only guy that does any sort of custom home heating installations. There are a couple of gas fireplace installers and one slam bam thank you mam forced air installer.
There is a huge demand for anyone who is willing to install forced air heating. I have a couple of years under my belt installing forced air. I am a Radiant guy though! But I could quadrouple my business by installing forced air. Tough dilemma. I am a wet head through and through but would I be jumping over a quarter to pick up a penny if I don't go full mechanical?
I really appreciate the wisdom of you guys that have been there. I would really appreciate some feed back.

GO FOR IT!!!!!
If you ar honest and want to install the equipment that make the people comfortable,..."GO FOR IT:. I am the opposite, doing more air side than boilers, but if I have any questions, I try to train myself, but if I still have questions I come here or I know where to find the answers. When Customers ask me a Q: that I don't know, I tell them honestly that I don't have the answer, but I know where to get it. Dont be afraid. If you are willing to do the job wright, you will be fine in my opinion. People want someone that is honest and knowledgable......... I think you will do well. Just follow your heart. Even if ther were 10 contractors in your area,... just do what you do and things will work themselves out.

Follow Both of your Blisses
Why exclusively do one or the other? Sell your customers options. What they ask for (FHA for the price) is fine.
Then add in for HydroAir, a nice HW boiler, domestic water off of one heating source. Variable speed AHU and zones, not one for the house but several. One source of combustion, not two. No separate DHW heater.
A single radiant zone for the bathroom or kitchen, or a radiant ready slab to be hooked up. Something extra, a better way!
Dan once wrote of a contractor who installed tubing in the basement slab for no cost at his own risk. They only would have to pay if they ever hooked it up. Customers ALWAYS had it hooked up.
Give them FHA but do it "Differently". Price the value fairly and let them see the benefit, the value for whatever premium you demand. Word will spread. Or your competition will try to mimic you. Either way customers will benefit as will the industry.
My gut tells me that you may lose a few of the hydro-air jobs at first especially if the customers are not as savvy yet. But because you offer options, you will get more of the straight FHA jobs to start. Word will spread...

Like Brad said... Give 'em options. Last thing the world needs is more FHA HO's who are there because they were never given the options. Ever get requests for radiant retrofits in 2 year-old basements? Ever ask them why they didn't do it in the first place at half the cost? Comfort is somewhere on their priority list and lots of times we can't change where. Give them the options, the choices, the pros and the cons and let them make an educated decision on how they want to spend their money. Most will appreciate you for giving them options instead just a price and many will even re-visit the priority list. If in the end they choose FHA and you got the job, so be it. You make a a few $$$ and they have the rest of their life to regret their decision. ;-)0 -

Wow! That wasn't the response I thought I would get at all! Good though. I though that I was going to be told that I am not trying hard enough to sell hydronics. I am pleased to hear that so many of you support the idea. That is exactly what I needed. Some positive feed back.
To be honest I sorta felt like I was betraying my fellow wet heads by considering forced air. But as Dan says in Just Add H2O you need to know your customer. I am going to take some of the ideas in this post as well and run with em. Who knows mabe one day we'll auger out toilets too:)0
