THE RIDGID PROPRESS PEOPLE ARE SAYING THE WITH THE RIGHT RINGS PROPRESS CAN BE USED FOR REPLACEMENT JOBS. I SEE THE SAME PROBLEMS MAYBE MORE USING THIS PRODUCT ON NEAR BOILER PIPING A REGULAR SOLDER JOINTS OR BRAZED CONNECTIONS AND COPPER PIPE.

    Steam rings

    I am told the same thing about the rings, but believe that you are right. You won't see me use Pro Press until the piping is below the water line. Also STOP YELLING!

    THE PVC PEOPLE TOLD US, SCHEDULE 80 PVC FOR STEAM PSI BELOW #125 AND SCH 40 PVC BELOW THE WATER LINE.

    ... you seen the Propress guys OK for this kind of application in writing? I'm especially interested in PEX being rated on steam - I wouldn't use it, but I'd be interested in seeing somebody actually put it it writing. (Somehow, I don't see that happening.) I'm not aware that Vic is approved for steam service.

    My personal experiences with things like 'O' rings and red rubber gaskets in steam service - even at very low pressures - is that they dry out, crack and leak.

    There you go...a garden hose drop header. Just make sure you use the Craftsman red hose, for hot water.

    red gasket

    Just removed failed (dried cracking) "red" gasket from 4 inch mains flange union on trane two pipe system. See photos. Replaced with black E P D M rubber gasket rated at 250*F steam. The red gasket had only been in service for 5 years. system had been operating at 5 to 12 PSI steam. Alfred

    ...applications like this, I look to the gasket manufacturer to provide application data. There are tables that list red rubber as being good to 250*F, and I'm sure that in services like water, that would be fine. For steam, they turn out like the ones in your pictures. I have a chunk of sheet gasket material just kicking around for surprises. It's good to 500*F, and is like a waxy shoebox cardboard like material. (Lots of people refer to them as "paper" gaskets, but it's not just paper.) Garlock at least used to make a line called "Blue Guard" - sheet or pre-cut.

    The Pro Press guys show those "o" rings for steam in their catalog. They also show "o" rings for gas in the catalog. We are not allowed to use the gas ones in New Jersey as of yet.

    In all seriousness, I too saw the PrpPress was rated for steam. We haven't used copper for steam and don't intend to start, but there are others in my area who do and it strikes me as odd to walk into a mechanical room and see copper mixed in with black iron.

    We've had an opportunity to use ProPress on a number of installations (water, not steam) and it's been great!

    Great jobs

    I have had the opportunity to use a Pro Press tool and find that it is a great tool and a major time saver. I agree that it shouldn't be used for steam. As a rule, copper header, Bad, steel header, Good!
