I find these on alot of the older steam systems around here. The dead giveaway is when the 2'wrench doesn't "feel right" while trying to loosen it. (thank God for the thread in place capabilities of the REMS when the pipe crumbles while learning!)

Some of you old-timers will remember these fittings. It's on 100 yr. old half-inch brass pipe we pulled out of a house in Piedmont.
Do you know what the fittings were called and how they were made-up?

running thread union
I'm glad those things went the way of brass water piping.
Thread the nut and coupling all the way onto the running thread, bring the other pipe up to it to line up, thread the coupling onto the MPT on the other pipe till tight, and wick the locknut and tighten it up against the coupling.
I've seen those on old gas lines, too....

is that a left-and-right coupling? And then corresponding left-hand threads on the short side?
