radiator leaks

My radiator is close but this morning was a lot water on the floor leaking from the air valve on the radiator, I open the open and close valve and stop. Why the air valve leak with the radiator was close?

    Leaking radiator

    Hi Dennis,

    How old is the shutoff valve on the radiator? I doubt very much that the valve will close completely. This will allow steam to enter and condense inside the radiator.
    That being said - there is very little chance that the condensate can return to boiler because the valve will stop the flow of water and there is now a vacuum created by the condensing steam.

    Given enough time and enough steam - the radiator will fill with condensate and flow out of the vent.

    I know from first hand experience with a second floor radiator that I wanted to close off. Steam would get by that closed valve because I could feel the first section was warm to the touch.


    Not a pro - just personal observations.
