Ball Valve for radiator supply valve

Hello,
I have a one pipe steam heat system in my house that was built in 1935. The radiators are recessed into the walls. Several of the radiator supply valves on the inlet side are leaking. I could try to repack several of them but a few are broken and wont close at all. Is it possible to replace them with a ball valve rather than a gate valve? It seems like a ball valve would be perfect for this application since you either want the valve fully open or fully closed. If so can anyone recommend a particular manufacturer? Is this something I should tackle myself as a homeowner? Thanks,

Yes you can replace with ball valves make sure you get full port on the ball valves personal favorites are conbraco(apollo),and nibco0 -
Steam valves vs Ball
The correct method is to use steam replacement hand-wheel valves, which have a union connection. The disc inside the valve will be rated for steam. Ball valves do not come with union nuts or in angle configuration to match the rough-in dimension of the original.
