Ryan,here are the basics:
Step 1 - calculate the volume of the pool. Assume an average depth of 5.5 feet (3 feet at the shallow end and 8 feet at the deep end = 8 + 3 divided by 2 = 5.5) So, 18 x 36 x 5.5 = 3564 cubic feet.
Step 2 - Calculate how many gallons of water are in the pool. 3564 cubic feet x 7.5 gallons per cubic foot = 26,730 gallons.
Step 3 - Calculate how many pounds of water are in the pool. 26,730 gallons x 8.33 pounds per gallon = 222,661 pounds.
Step 4 - Since it takes 1 btu to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 degree F, you will next need to determine how many btu you will need to raise the temperature at the desired rate.

heat pump for a swimming pool
how would i go about sizing a heat pump pool heater for an in-ground swimming pool that is 18x36 with an 8-foot deep end?0 -
No Heat Loss in Calculations
Your calculations do not include heat loss while heating the pool. We sell quite a few heat pumps for pools from heatsiphon.com. The website will lead you through the calculations on sizing.0
