What is the purpose of the tongue on an air vent?

Hi,

I just boiled all my air vents in vinegar, and they all blow air now, but the tongue fell out of a couple of them. Another is bent. I pushed one of them back in, but am not sure that that will do it. I am wondering what the purpose of the tongue is. These are all Vent-Rite #1 adjustable vents, and the dial still seemed to work without the tongue.
