Thank you for ans, but this is on a test and thay dont give you more, but I think that a high p,boiler wood have a feed water. thank you

    What application is it in? Does it have a feed water tank with a pump? How high is the pressure?

    I'll take a shot @ it...

    If the feed water is @ 212F then adding 972 btu will make it steam. So very roughly, 972 goesinta 40,000 = 41 times, so 41 pounds is roughly 5 gallons. ( Is it a sterilizer?)It isn't that simple though, because as the pressure goes up the actual steam temp is higher ie. 125 # steam is 353 degrees F. I'm standing next to a boiler that @ 212 F feedwater and an input of 38,500,000 btu it will produce 30,000 #/hour of @125# steam, so the additional btu required is really more like 1283btu per #. hope that helps.
