The water lines should have never been put in the attic for this exact reason you are seeing. I guess you could install some kind of valve after the shutoff to drain just before winter. That is if the valve itself isn't in the attic which I dont thik it is.

    I don't know jack about a/c, but I have a question. I have a customer who has a few air handlers for his a/c in his attic and he was complaining that the water lines to the humidifiers freezes every winter and wants a way to shut the water in the winter and drain it. My question is this: why would an air conditioning system need humidifiers when you are trying to de-humidify? This is on Long Island. Enquiring minds want to know. Thanks.

    The humidifier is used in the winter to add moisture to the dry air. It is not used in the summer when the air is already humid and the cooling coil is used to dehumidify.
