reznor rab350 waste oil boiler

we have a rab350 waste oil boiler that seems to take alot of maintence. About every 115 hours of run time. They use used oil from tractors. End of nozzle area builds up with oil crust chucks. we checked flue with anylzer. we also checked electrode measurments from nozzle. Does any body have any of these out in the field that used waste oil or regular heating oil any input would be great. Is there certain nozzle to use with waste oil than regular heating oil in rab350? I had to ask this because of looking back at past posted messages.

waste oil burners Do not use regular -nozzles you use for #2 oil -pressure atomizing burners --waste oil burners are air atomizing burners ---- have heaters to heat the heavier oil -they have an air atomizing nozzle, oil is heated and mixed at the nozzle with regulated air from an air compressor --there is a seal at the nozzle to keep the 2 seperate and mix only at the nozzle swirler--the waste oil burners are higher maintenance some require rebuilding every season -0 -
Don't have any time on that specific unit-
But I have the opportunity (?) to work on a few different types used in automotive repair shops. If memory serves me right, the one recurring problem was lack of "clean" fuel. I was always amazed at how much guck the systems would actually tolerate! The tank was often allowed to get very low, then they would dump in a bunch of barrels of waste oil, without ever bothering to clean it first. All the goo that had been settling and slowly congealing then got all happy happy and started trying to join the party at the burner. Dirty lines, filters, nozzles, ignitors, sensors, laundry (oops, that's my problem)-you get the picture. Another thing I noticed directly related was that the tanks were left open, so that on top of the metal filings, sludge, etc., anything else was likely to be found in there.0 -
oil 2 4 6 gas thanks for the reply. It has the right burner. Is this normal having to clean every 100 hours or so? Is it normal that the oil crust chunks up at the swirler? when cleaning the combustion chamber should the ash be all the same color threw out?0 -
I believe the oil preheater
is an option for the Reznors. It really needs to have one. Especially if the oil is stored outdoors.
I install the Clean Burn boilers and it has two oil preheaters standard equipment.
I've heard the passage way plug often with the soot and ash in that boiler also, according to service guys around here. I'm not convinced that block is ideal for waste oil use.
Another thing to keep in mind, lots of synthetic (sp) oils being used these days. They have a much higher flash point and do not combust well. Clean Burn has up-ed the temperature on their preheaters to help with this.
The newest 15,000 mile oils will be even worse, as they keep making them better for lubrication life but worse to burn as used oil.
You may have to blend some heating oil with the waste oil, during cold periods.
Just wait till they dump a batch of antifreeze into the tank! Had that happen on one of my installs recently. Luckily the owners had dealt with that problem before at his old shop, and handled it before I arrived.
Used oil is a very messy fuel to work with
ATF burns a lot cleaner. The transmission shop have a lot less "issues" with their waste oil burners. A lot less ash generated.
Waste oil is not really "free" heat as some of the ads lead you to believe
