Hydronic Venting

in THE MAIN WALL
We have no vents on our steam systems. NaDa.
We do have vents on the water section of our heating/cooling systems.
If they are not absolutely necessary for a system to run & they often leak, why are they considered a key component by so many people on this site?
Is the reason for them the same for water and steam?
I'm trying to figure out if this has something to do with our banging condensate pipes or the "popcorn" poping sound coming from the domestic water heat exchangers.
