Installed an electric boiler about 2 1/2 years ago. On Friday I was summoned to look at it. I think that it must have over heated, as 2 of the nylon straps holding the insulation were melted and dangling. The owner said that water was escaping through the top of the tank, the guage face literally blew off, and it appears that the T&P never let go.

It now appears that this manufacture only waarants this boiler for a year. I only warrant my labour for a year.

Question, do I bite the bullet and supply a new boiler for free, and just charge for parts and labour, or should I feel no fault and charge for everything??????

    this is a strange thing...

for some reason the homeowners insurance policy wont cover the Pressure relife valve yet it will pay for the rest of the work . check into it. maybe it is different where you live.

    Weez,

no damage, the boiler is located in a back room "bunker" kinda place. Could have been a lot if the water had hit the electric panel! As far as I know, homeowners ins. does not cover replacement of "broken" boilers.

    relief valve

I would think that the fact that the relief valve didn't operate as it was supposed to would allow you some relief (pardon the pun). If the valve was supplied by the boiler manufacturer, there should be some amicable and proper way to pursue it. I am surprised that the insurance wouldn't take any involvement, as it would appear that all safeguards were in place.

    electric boiler

I have a question.....unless it was specified or at the owner's request, why would you install any kind of a boiler that only had a 1 year warranty???? I don't mean to sound critical, but this is a lesson I learned a long time ago, the hard way. If it was specified or insisted on by the owner, you're off the hook. I think you're off the hook anyway, but.....get in touch with the manufacturer or his rep and discuss the situation. If the unit needs to be replaced, they may do something for your customer. If this is a very good customer, I might volunteer labor if they buy the unit, but why put in another one????? I'd be looking for a better unit, and what a time to prove that it wasn't the best choice in the first place. You may have to eat some humble pie, but don't make the same mistake twice.

    Well I made a decision

and have decided to go ahead with a full warranty with the locally built boiler. I will bite the bullet and install it for no charge. I just can't convince myself that these people should pay for someone elses mistake.

Lesson learned, will now only spec the locally built Allied electric boiler!

i think you made the right decision here..

we live or die by our reputations..and as they used to say in the navy, ''one awe s**t wipes out a hundred at-a-boys''..sometimes its best to turn that awe shucks into a testimonial of how good your company is at standing behind the install..which is one hell of alot more than most manufacturers would..
