My new dropped header

It doesn't seem to heat any faster, though the indirect tank gets satisfied more quickly it seems. Perhaps that was due to scraping some of the crud off the combustion chamber. I have a cleaning & combustion test scheduled for Dec 20th, earliest they had. Ed mentioned it could be all the sawdust (and there was a lot over 3 years) that settled in the basement getting sucked into the intake. Suprised there are no air filters on the burners.
The steam timing from dead cold is as follows:
9 mins- header heated
13 mins main starts heating
18 mins long return hot
21 mins short return hot
25 mins 1st section in all rads hot
One interesting thing, rear tapping made steam 3 mins before front.
Looks like I need more main venting. Header isn't insulated, mains are 90% insulated, risers to each rad are not insulated.
I've been skimming it a bit each night and the floating oily crud is gradually going away. However there's still a ton of crud that gets kicked up when the burner fires, turning the water solid dark brown. Should I flush the whole thing or will the crud eventually settle?

Finally bit the bullet. Here are some pics. Moving the main vents in from the end was probably the hardest part, I had the pro do that :-)
I would like to know about that crud in the boiler, seems like a lot of buildup for 3 seasons. I know, I know. But I wasn't living here for one of them so it's only 2 full heating seasons.
Thanks to everyone for their help over the years, it made this possibe.

my new dropped header
Hi Jim now that the dropped header is done how well does it heat any improvement in the time it takes to make steam and heat the radiators0 -
3 seasons?
Your saying the boiler has run 3 season's without a tuneup? If that's the case your next call should be to get the system tuned up and ready for this season.. It should be serviced every year. IMHO.. The piping looks good btw!! You did a nice job on that...0 -

Are you back in business? Have you moved?

I agree
that much accumulation in the flueways means poor combustion. There should not be any soot at all.
The header looks great! Combined with the main vents it should make the system run nicely. Get the burner set up as it should be and you'll save a lot of fuel.

Flush it out with a hose
when the boiler is COLD!
Much of that sludge is lying on the bottom of the boiler, and is kicked up when it fires.
Never turn cold water into a hot boiler, you'll crack it.

Removed a main vent
It took 2 minutes off the time for steam to reach the end. 6 minutes instead of 8. It was puffing and sucking, it wasn't a smooth flow of air. Could this be due to the bouncing water line? It was moving about 2-3" at its most violent.

I think so
keep cleaning the boiler and see if that doesn't cure the heavy breathing.
