which is better/more efficient/less maintenance. Suggested sources? Need built in potable hot water for residential use (three bathrooms active family of 5). Heat load aprox 50,000 BTU [my guess]. Unit will supply only Three 12 X 15 X 9 ft ceiling rooms each with two outside walls, little insulation. Main heat source is Oil fired Steam (what else ) :-)Want to leave existing Steam boiler for main/peak heat. Replace existing gas fired OLD potable hot water heater (30 gallon) plus add these three rooms on the first floor to this new radiant/potable combo unit.

That depends...
Are you asking about converting the entire house to radiant? Or adding radiant to the existing steam system? Or, leaving the steam as is - and doing the three rooms mentioned and d/h/w - ONLY - (leaving the steam to do whatever it's already doing)?
If the question is only re: oil vs. gas, both fuels can be run in 94+ AFUE boilers, either oil fireed or gas (LP and NG).
Please refine the question a tad. We can make suggestions. We just need more definition of your intentions.0 -

Thanks Ken. Have updated the problem definition. Added the new poser, is a tankless unit viable?
