Takagi TK 1 warranty trouble
Has anyone had difficulty with failed heat exchangers in under 4 yrs on this model? I'm getting some odd answers from rep. I'll post results when I have them, but would love to hear if this is unique or...0 -
Hhhmmmmmmmm
We've installed more than a few and have not had any failures of any kind, let alone heat exchangers. They have been absolutely flawless. How many of these have you run into and what type of system were they installed on?0 -
Yeah, same here; I'm a little amazed really. Getting some funny (not ha ha) answers. I'll post on when I get a straight one. Has to do with the old TK1 (discontinued) b-vent (ok then not now) and a heat exchanger failing from the outside in, in less than 4 years. We shall see.
PS forgot to say just domestic hot water single family res 3' straight up flue Dirt dawg simple, nothin fancy, and it's Calif coast so the snow load is; not.0 -
Interesting
Failing from the outside in......... Methinks that condensation falling from the flue may be having some negative effect on the HX. I would wager that airborne contaminants from inside the house could be mixing with the flue gas to cause a hyper corrsive brew that;s attacking the HX when it drips back.............just a WAG but it would make sense.
FIY we have never installed any with B-Vent, always side wall vented with Stainless.0 -
The B-vent is BIG clue
I have seen some of these things installed with B-vent before. It's a big No-No! I have also seen HX failures in these jobs in less than 1 year when vented improperly.
Venting is the most important thing in the life of a tankless heater. Water quality is second.
Post what kind of response you get from Takagi. I am more familiar with Noritz who does a great job of standing behind their product. (But also a great job of knowing how to teach proper installation)

The vent was only 3' long and straight up, also not inside house. OK in the manual then (in fact they used it as a selling feature), not now. 3 years seems a little brief no matter what. Vent looked fine by the way, although it went back SS.0 -
Nice
Never thought of it that way but it's true enough to be scary.0
