Relocating Recessed Radiators

in THE MAIN WALL
My 1 pipe steam radiators are recessed into the wall. There is only a thin foam layer of insulation between them and the outside siding, thus a huge heat sink. I'd like to move each of them (about 7) forward into the room about 6 inches, and close off the recessed space behind them. My question is, can I move the radiators forward by using a S type pipe? The valve now sits at a right angle to the radiator, as most do. But if I install a S fitting onto the valve and bring the radiators 6 inches forward, will this force cooled water back onto incoming steam, and cause a problem? I'd really prefer not to drill new holes in the floor, and break and rejoin pipes in the cellar to move the radiators forward into the room. Thanks in advance...Brad

    Your good to go Brad with two 90's and two nipples of proper size for proper pitch. In one-pipe steam the condensate always travels against the steam unless there is a return end drip on the other side of the radiator, not too common. The only thing I'm not sure is why you would want to show off those recessed rads. In my opinion I have one and I think there ugly enough to stay recessed. You can create a nice wooden enclosure like this but make sure to have enough vent holes up top to transfer the convective heat currents properly. This one in the picture does not.

    re-locate

    Remove valve ,replace with elbow & proper sized nipple to correct center measurment. you might want to consider panel wall hung radiation more pleasing to the eye but cast iron is absolutely more better. & re- install valve or replace. Good luck

    Bob is right on, except for the wall-hung part =)

    Beauty and pleasantness to the eyes is on the part of the beholder and I behold cast iron being more pleasing to my eyes save for the recessed rads which imho are fairly hideous. This being the reason they hide behind a wall enclosure so they don't offend the homeowner and any visitors.
