low pressure single line steam heat

In starting this system this fall, I am unable to get the air out of the radiators and the system. My Pressuretrol is set near the bottom at about 1# pressure. The main air valve on the big pipes seems to be o.k. There is a water drain between that valve and the boiler. If I open that water valve and fire up the system allowing it to run for awhile, will that clear the air out of the lines? I have read your "I Got Steam Heat" book and it was a great help to me last year but I cannot get the system operating this year in my 2 story, 4 apt. house, 13 radiators. ?????

If you are not getting the air out

then I suspect your vent is not working properly or is not sized properly even though you said that they are OK. How old are they and of what type?

Can you post a photo or diagram of this valve arrangement? The only way to know if opening the valve will clear the air out is to try it I suppose.

    Water Blockage

First check the gauge glass and its shut off valves . Should see a level and its shut offs open to see the proper level .

Remove the main vent to check if there is a plugged return . Water trapped in the main will plug up the system .
