Fujitsu VRF multi zone

I understand they and others are great units. My concern would be for repairs. I have asked the boss numerous times for meaningful training and all we get is a sales pitch. The boss says that is all the training available. These things have a level of sophistcation that is unprecedented. Where they are dependable, they will fail sooner or later. Be nice to have some level of technical expertise, so we are not scrambling for answers when the time comes. Especially at 2 AM. Any comments or suggestions?

    Fujitsu VRF multi zone a/c

Just finished a Fujitsu VRF "Airside" multi zone install. 4 ton unit w/ only 2 tons connected currently. Very interesting unit. Super quiet is why I chose it as it is near property line and our noise ordinances are quite strict. Has some quirky wire up conditions but very quiet and compact, used ducted air handlers but can use either ductless or ducted or both. Bit funky on the thermostat controls although. Tim

I have the service manuals but still will want to meet with the technical engineer to ask further questions and clarify as needed. Tim

When it comes to the nitty gritty of the electronic controls on these units, I am a firm believer in the 800 tech support number. As much as I'd like to be as technically advanced as these units, I know that I won't work on enough to keep the info in my brain.

We are in the process of installing our first Mitsubishi City Multi, 3 indoor units, one condenser, all off the same line set. I assume this is similar to the VFR. The guys have asked me to get some tech training, but I don't know if it would help much. Knowledge overload.

Many of the 800 tech support lines are not 24 hr. affairs. The things usually close up after hours. Be sure to install back up heat.

    Re: Fujitsu & Mitsu installs

I have researched the City multi quite a bit and it seems like a very sound performer. I would have chose it for this job but the outdoor unit was too big for location. ? are you installing the 4 ton or the larger >7 ton w/ heat reclaim mix box. One of my clients just had a 15 ton w/ appx 15 air handlers w/ heat reclaim, Quite amazing piece equipment except for the screaming banshee phase converter they used because they did not have easy access to 3 phase to the house.

    Fujitsu Training

Fujitsu does offer training sessions that are conducted by their technical team.

All in all, the training sessions are good, but you have to take some of what they say with a grain of salt, as they are specialists on THEIR equipment.

At a recent seminar, one of the instructors mentioned that, if the low side pressure fails to reach the desired low side pressure of 118 psig or there abouts, the system is short of refrigerant. PERIOD. Remember that these systems do not have high side pressure ports, so taking a high side pressure reading is not possible.

Of course I had to chime in. I asked about the situation in which the meterning device was defective or otherwise stuck closed. This, of course, would cause the low side pressure to drop. An unsuspecting technician may continue to add refrigerant to the system and, without being able to take a high side pressure reading, eventually do some major damage.

The answer to this was... "Well, you have to check other things first".

If you have to "check" other things first, the statement made by their "head tech" is far from accurate.

I personally picked up a lot of good technical information at the session, but you have to be able to separate the technical information from the sales pitch.

It's the 4 ton system. The guys are into day 2 of the install. I'll post some pics when it's done.
