    Wadda ya Think

We went to a job on Tuesday that had a leak from the heating system. My man found a split in the rubber Heatway hose, right before the barbed adpt. He fixed and went along.

Saturday night I got the call that water was leaking out of the cieling. When I got there it was from a different spot. Opened the cieling and .... right before the barbed adpt. was this leak. I also found the diaphragm tank was gone. That could give high preasure if the relief did'nt let go ...

But enough to do this ????

    Unless the relief valve

setting approached the test pressure of the tubing.... seems like a defect, latent or otherwise. Linear split? Was the other one also linear? No bulging that I can see, just a split. That seems odd to me, like a chisel was taken to it.

That blonde fiber coming out- has anyone seen Dolly Parton lately?

    HMMMMM

Is this groundhog day? Deja vu? I feel like we've been here before. Sorry. Just being sinicle. Never seen that problem. I hope I don't. I am very interested in the conclusion though. Keep us informed.

    I'm not trying

to do any bashing here. I think its a very odd blow out. I can't really figure what would cause this.

Both about two inches from the end ??

Looks like it had the wrong

    clamp, for one thing.

Could the tube have had a razor knife near it? Possibly to cut open the plastic bands around the coil when they ship?

That tube, if it is Onix?, is listed to 100psi. I doubt you came close to that?

    The Clamps

    where two S.S. hose clamps.

Whats odd HR, is that it was a twenty foot or so run, between a piece of Baseboard and a toespace heater. Both leaks where at the end where it was connected to the adpt. This system was installed about ten years ago.

I could see a razor cut at one end but both ??

  • stress factors

Semmed to me that where the stress points... Same idea with radaitor hoses on truck/car cooling systems, they most likely to splint near the hose end...

  • You never mentioned the operating temp. If this early hose is subjected to 150 degree plus, it will fail only a matter of time. As someone said, usually at a fitting which is the weakest point as, the reinforcing fibers were cut at that point.
  • Yes butt..

If you will look closely, the tear aligns with where the butt ends of the radial clamp do not compress...

Hence the reason for constant tension clamps. They give overlapping full radial coverage.

Hopefully not something that will be a regular occurence. I'm sure the boys at Watts Radiant would like to see that section of hose.

Have you done a hydrostatic test of the pressure relief valve? I would.
