Asbestos Removal Quotes?

I quoted replacing this, (as Frank says), "snowman" HW boiler, but I told the HO they would have to choose(and pay) the asbestos removal contractor.Then I was "verbally" told I had the job, but they were still looking for a removal guy. Anyway today I get a call and now the HO is "balking" because of the asb. removal price he got for this. I know prices are generally not discussed here, but does $5K Can. sound right?,,that`s ½ again, as much as my replacement quotation!! <BR><BR>Dave

    The price does not sound unreasonable to me. Like all repairs the home owner should get 3 quotes. I have an abatement contractor that I recommend to customers. The abatement contractor also removes the old boiler.

    Thanks for your response steven, I guess in my area of the country new boiler sales is second nature to ridding of the old unit! Certainly seems not as simple as ridding yourself of an old car at the junkyard with leaking gasoline or whatever.

    sounds right but be careful

    I have seen a couple of occasions that the contractor just walked in with normal clothing on. Took a claw hammer to the asbestos, sweep ed it up into a bag then handed the H.O. a certificate and walked out.

    Make sure they follow the rules.

    Not quite the same but...

    I got two quotes for removal of about the same amount of asbestos (except it is on piping). One company was at $2600, the other was just over $4000. Definately get a couple more quotes.

    I also found out that here (Denver) a homeowner can do removal themselves as long as it is disposed of in properly marked bags in the proper landfill. Not that I'd want to do it.

    I was ball parked

    upwards of several thousand dollars. They said it was just as cheap for them to remove the entire boiler as remove the asbestos only because it changed the containment variable and the way they had to set things up in the house. Kevin

    Asbestos abatement

    In a major city, expect high abatement costs. In Seattle, I have found a company that would strip that boiler with permit for 1/3 the price, if it was ONLY the boiler, and no additional piping. Perhaps you should arrange another abatement quote? Abatement costs are high due to insurance premiums, equipment costs to monitor the particulates, and of course, supply and demand of available contractors.

    recommending asbestos abatement contractors

    Steven, you may want to consider this: Stay out of the "liability loop" regarding asbestos. Don't even recommend someone. We have been instructed by both our legal and insurance pros that if you "recommend" or sub out the abatement, you open yourself to any liability claims if something goes wrong, or if any regulatory infraction take place. Here's what we do......tell the customer there are several good abatement contractors in the area and they are all listed in the Yellow Pages. Get some quotes, pick one, let us know when the work will be performed, and make sure you see a Clean Air certificate before you start work. Seems like a lot, but it only takes once to get caught in the "liability loop"...just ask any lawyer !!!

    TAKE OFF!!! I use a company here in SLC that charges about $2K total for asbestos AND boiler removal. Clean job, state licensed. Here you always own it. As explained, should the haz landfill lose it's license, you would need to go pick up your asbestos, if you had it removed...

    Clean Air Certificate

    What is a "clean air" certificate and when is it required? That is, is it required anytime any amount of a******s is removed?
