    steam boiler sub-basement pit URGENT

    I have this problem for homework due tomorrow and I can't find it anywhere. It asks "Why are boilers (steam boilers) sometimes located in a sub-basement pit?"

    Heck of a school they are sending you to....

    The primary reason many older boilers were located in pits is to assure adequate "A" dimension, the dimension between the boiler normal waterline and the lowest steam carrying pipe.

    If the boiler was higher and the "A" dimension compressed to less than 28 inches (1 psi pressure), condensed steam (condensate or return) would not make it back to the boiler and hammering/banging would occur.

    All hell would break loose, dogs would mate with cats and hamsters would start singing show tunes in Yiddish.

    I made that last sentence up.

    Hmm things to think about

    Thu i found the first part very intresting ..i find myself seeking deep thoughts on the second, Dogs and cats hmmmm, but the hampster thing may keep me up at night.....

    Boilers in Pits

    The reason a boiler is installed in a Pit is due to the fact taht there is not enough height between the lost steam carrying pipe and the water level of the boiler.

    There is a measurement called Dimenson A. That measurement means that for boilers less than 100,000 BTUh a height of 14" must be between the bottom of the lowest steam carrying pipe and the boiler water line. Boilers greater than 100,000 BTUs require a Dimension A of 27".

    This thumb rule is predicated on this fact, Smaller boilers generally have a system pressure drop of 1/4 psi or less and larger boilers have a system pressure drop of a 1/2 psi.

    Small boilers have smaller pipe and shorter runs of pipe.

    Large boilers have largwer pipe and longer runs.

    The two different A dimensions are based on pipe and system resistance.

    The best thing about anything in a pit is when you have to make a repair and end up standing on your head and barking like chicken just to get to it.

    I do complain alot
