at 3 AM! Thinking about that commercial - "What's in your wallet" & got to wondering - "What's in your toolbox, or truck, or glovebox that equals the credit-card get-me-outta-de-jam-man thing."

A special tool? A pamphlet? An insomniac's phone number?

In The Middle of the Night

Night running , out with the news paper diliveries and bread trucks..Drinking coffee and reading the paper under the trucks dim dome light .Pale faced and cold boots ,watching the drunks stagger home. No supply houses open so you better be stocked. A night runner stocks up on nickel and dime parts a day guy would throw out..You cringe until you find that odd ball part rumming through the packed buckets,boxes and draws in a dark cold truck .. At times I hunted down other pale faced coffee drinking tech for the missing holy grail .


Using washing machine hoses as hydronic jumpers , epoxy ,hose clamps , rainbow rubber , screw plugs , jumper leads ,

I Don't miss them nights. Open supply houses are better and have free doughnuts to boot.

Mine

A flash like that can lightup the night sky.

A pair of extra thick reading glasses.

And a tape recorder with a recording of myself tellin myself what I forgot.

A peppermint pattie.

IOM's - Installation and operation manuals of every boiler I have sold/installed. Tekmar IOM's complete me, they had me at hello. Taco wiring diagrams and CAD drawings of jobs I have designed.

Small electronic tool bag with jumpers, thermister sensors, spark ignitors, buffing wheel that fits my cordless drill that can buff-to-new a rectification probe or spark igniter.
Small pocket PC (Thank you Lochinvar) with all of my contact information to almost every tech dept.

Ideally, I would also have a bag of chocolate covered coffee beans, but that will have to wait until after Lent.

while visiting NYC -

on the east side I was out for a walk late (yes I'm a crazy canuck/tourist) Service van pulls up in front of the pub I was walking past (Irish of course) side door is opened. That van was piled 4 feet deep - and it looked like all good stuff too! He had it all I'm sure - must of had every SH part available in there!I would characterize that as the shotgun approach!

remember when

all you needed was a flashlight, 4-way screwdriver, pump plyers, universal thermocouple, PP generator, one AC & one MV gas vlv, a 24-v transformer and you were good to go!

voltmeters were analog only & left on the truck till needed.
