want their material to be copied & redistributed. They view it as free advertising, broadening their reach. Although that's a bit of a stretch in this case.

Plus, you'd have to be quite the knucklehead to use an install manual that wasn't obtained directly from the manufacturer.

I don't know if this was authorized so...

... I thought I'd bring this up for the individual manufacturers. While looking for UPS 15-58 information via Google, the following site popped up as the first entry. The site contains brochures and installation manuals related to HTP, Taco, Tekmar, Burnham, Argo, and other products. If this was not authorized and any of you feel strongly about having your copyright violated, you might want to send a letter to the site admin.

    Actually, there appears to be

no copyright violations, JMO! They did not modify or steal the data, it's still in the format of the originator with copyright notices and all.

Under federal law ANYONE can make ONE copy of anything for 'educational purposes', after that it becomes an issue. See section 106A of the 1976 Copyright Act and title 17 of the U.S. Code.

It's amazing how many schools use to think they could make copies of something up the wazoo until a couple got into big trouble.

We have five school teachers and two teacher/authors in the family. The four public school teachers have all been to recent briefings on the Copyright laws and the Feds are watching, closely.

I had a situation a couple of years ago and took the wrong route, next time we'll get it right! Education is expensive, but the alternative is priceless.

    Well, that's why I wonder

You see, I thought copyright protected an authors work and required anyone that wants to make a copy (outside of fair use, etc.) to get permission first. It is my understanding that unless a site gets permission first that it ought not to redistribute copyrighted works, whether they're publicly available or not.

For example, as a manufacturer, I really would not like people to re-host installation manuals on the internet, since that would possibly disseminate old, outdated, or potentially even dangerous manuals.

I thought I'd bring it up in case any of the manufacturers here have an issue with it. I've spent a lot of time hunting down folk that stole and re-hosted content from my site as their own, so I know how it feels. Usually, a polite letter is all it takes for the stuff to go to the bit-bucket.

    Now that I agree with!

  • Outdated Literature

I don't have a problem with this except that all of the data is at least 2 years old. Not so important with product literature but very important with I&O manuals.
