Hot water heater makes water hammer when cycling on or off

Thirteen years is a pretty long time considering the warranty period. You Mother's is still operating but how efficient is it and how quick can it recover? Definitely something to think about.

I am not aware of any chemical that will do what you are suggesting.

Try Rhomar-Chemical...

Hot water heater makes water hammer when cycling on or off

I have a 13 year old, A.O Smith gas fired HW heater. It makes a water hammering sound cycling on or off. Any ideas as what might be causing this, thanks.

    Hammer time...

Depending on your water quality, excessive calcium deposits have been known to form in the botton a vessels such as water tanks and Hot water boilers. As the water heats the conduction from the burner if force to penetrat this layer of calcium which makes a hammering sound. The typical response was to pull water off the bottom once a month When new to try and clear the cal. formation before it turned to ,..well,,."Basically, Rock". Your 10 year tank doesen't owe you anything. Consider replacing it.

Thanks Mike. I thought i could get a few more years out of it. My mom's HW heater still going over 35yrs. Any chemical i could pour in tank to softening-up and eventually disintegrate the calcium.

    Not sure

I am not aware of a chem. that will disolve the calcium, but why would you want to. Time for a new tank. They are relatively inexpensive and it may be to your advantage to filter your water before hitting the tank. I mean we all have Calcium, Iron and basically crap deposits in our water, but it's to what degree. Some water is unusually hard and some water is no problem. Good luck.

    I agree

Unfortunalty the older tanks where just made better.

Get yours to a junk yard soon because it will pick the time to go and its gonna be the worst time. Think Thanksgiving, when the family is coming or Monday morning, right before that hectic day you've got planned. Better yet the day after the wife tells you SHE thinks you should get a new one and you tell her " Nah, my mothers is stilling going strong, get me another beer will Ya ? ".
