scariest installs for halloween

The homeowner thought this was caused by rainwater, all winter. Then claimed it had never pumped flue gas out the water heater draft hood before.

    HB,

Got any more pics of that "mixing device" ?

That's got to be about the scariest piping one so far....but LCHMB and the oil boiler on the pallet, with all that fire server at the base has got to be the winner ....so far. BOO!

Ron, definately scarey, but tags will go out in short time compared to that pallet. BTW M.E....That birds nest STILL looks the same! (I got called out there a couple weeks back!) Chris

This looks like the *after* photo when a 1968 Lincoln comes out the compactor at the wrecking yard.

    This wasnt

The install on this furnace wasn't bad, but when I got there for a no heat call I was a little curious. The woman was talking how everyone in the house had been sick...Wonder why??

    Great picture...

... an alien spaceship landed in the flue pipe, then escaped from the combustion chamber! :-)

Have noticed this for about 5 years. Yes, that's the outer case of a central A/C condensing unit and yes, the chimney is in use. Note the slight angle to make it "safe".

    Code Police!

Where are the code police when you need them! There doesn't appear to be very much mortar on the top 3 or 4 courses of brick either! Holy Cow!

    Is that...

... the heating professional taking a bow before this mess to appease any ghosts before he rips it out? :-P

Lots of nice components that meet spec, etc. installed in a most haphazard way. What a waste of good materials.

    sweet baby jesus!!!

Am I seeing this right? Did he encase and seal a box around the furnace, cutting off combustion and dilution air. vent it horizontally with C vent through the wall with no exhauster, co vented with the HWH, went DOWN into the common, has no natural draft, added a dryer vent hood to the end of the pipe, and faced it into the building wall? where flue gases of 300-450° will exit, NEXT TO a window!!

If he aint dead...kill him and clean the gene pool, cuz he is tryin to commit suicide...

no one ever NOTICED THIS BEFORE YOU!?!?!?!?!?!

    well...

No, no one noticed this before me because the installer (DIY) has been repairing it. The installer is a relative of theirs, which explains the dumb looks I got when I blew a gasket and wouldn't make it run but got my camera instead :)

She said, "It's worked okay so far, why not just fix it ?" When I explained the danger she said they always keep a basement window open and only use it until it gets real cold when they switch to the coal heater :0

The dryer hood was an attempt at keeping out the "rainwater" that kept dripping on the HSI and shorting it out. That window is the master bedroom...

    Trains and brains...
