Is there a formula to calculate the square footage of air in a cast iron radiator.

Perhaps you mean cubic feet. You can find tables with those types of dimensions for different radiators online (thin-tubes have less air per EDR, columns have the most).
Try googling "htghelper" which has some rough estimates.
