We have noticed a lets say far more than usual amount of call outs . some of my friends have expressed some heavy dissatisfaction with those valves...Unfortunately the conversation ended with their saying "i don't have time to waste running back to mess with them."

and, a"a zone valve should work right for At Least 5 years."

and " It costs me hundreds of dollars to be pulled off a job to go switch them out"

Well, i haven't given up on them although i have purchased an abnormal amount of heads ,and replaced a couple few more from stock... they seem to be failing open.

it is burning heavily into daylight...i gotta go to work.

it would take me weeks to go back to every job....

i have reset the systems a few times an dashed off on a few.....oh well, it gives me a chance to build a relationship with the homeowner :)

    Taco ESP Zone Valve

    To all wholesalers and contractors:
I wanted to fill you in on a recent development concerning the Taco ESP Zone Valve.
My position here at Taco is providing technical support, and customer service. I deal with calls pertaining to field issues with any taco products. As this heating season progressed I started to receive calls about ESP’s acting up (usually not fully closing). I worked closely with our wholesalers and contractors to get valves returned to us for evaluation. Their interest and assistance allowed our product management, manufacturing and engineering teams to work quickly in identifying and fixing the issues the technicians were experiencing in the field.

What we found is a software glitch that can cause an over heat situation. When the thermostat is satisfied the valve actuator may not return to the full closed position. Because this is a random occurrence, the next time the thermostat actuates the microchip is reset and goes back into a normal operation mode, until the next random glitch occurs.

The situation has been corrected and new heads are being built for Taco inventory in expectation of field requirements. All ESP Zone Valves with the “software patch” will carry an 8/06 date code or later. The master cartons and the individual valve boxes will carry an orange sticker to differentiate them from older inventory.

This now leaves us with several action items:

    1. We know that the ESP Zone Valves with this problem carry dates codes of 04/05, 07/05 – 12/05, and 05/06 - 07/06. It is important to know the scope of this issue only affects about 1/3 of Taco’s total production over the last 18 months. The other 2/3 of production is unaffected.
    2. We need to swap out our own inventory as well as our wholesaler’s inventory. A procedure to do this has been implemented.
    3. We, along with our reps, must also work with contractors to help them through the precarious situation the ESP has put them in. We have a procedure for our reps to get replacement actuators into the hands of those affected contractors ASAP.

The important thing here is that the problem is random and does not affect every ESP, the problem has been identified and traced to specific date codes and a fix has been instituted. If you have actuators that match the dates codes above please contact your local Taco representative for replacement actuators. Click here to find your local Taco representative. Taco, has and will always stand behind the product, and do what it takes to remedy the problem.

    positive attitude

Thank you, for maintaining a positive attitude. You mentioned in your thread you purchased an abnormal amount of heads. If the faulty heads fall within the date codes mentioned, they are covered under the manufacturer’s warranty. I'll be here if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you for the heads up. I wish many other manufacturers would follow Taco's lead here. Thanks again.
