Dolphin System

We have had one of these in operation for a few years (3?). Previous to this installation our customer and our sales personell visited a large factory that has many cooling towers and many Dolphin systems installed. They said the towers were as clean as could be and that these systems worked great.

We installed one on a cooling tower (200 ton) which is used for free cooling in the winter (via plate & frame) and condenser water for the 200 ton chiller in the summer. This system also has a sand filter which filters the remote sump tank. No Chemicals are used. (Green Building) (water treatment is NOT my area of expertice).

We are getting a lot of scale buildup recently with this system. I suspect the sand filter is doing most of the cleaning. Efforts seem to be focused on lowering the conductivity. more make-up more drain. The scale particles are large enough to plug the trash screen in the tower.

My understanding is that the Dolphin "Magic Rays" are supposed to break down the scale into fine particles (baby powder) so that it can be passed to the drain or filtered out. Hope this helps.

    dolphin

We are installing a dolphin system on a closed circuit cooler now that will be started this spring. I did not specify it. I'm glad I did not because I won't be responsible if there are issues. I think it will work okay. You still need blow down but no chemicals.

I can't offer you any more experience.

    We have them under consideration

Had the local rep in for a Q&A session. (We could have called it "flogging the dolphin" I suppose, but somehow resisted :)

Application is a building where cooling and boiler blowdown has an impact on the on-site septic system limitations. Claims to reduce blowdown need by 20% but it was tough to pin down answers.

Cost for what the device is (an in-line piece of line-size plastic or pipe material-matching pipe with wires embedded in it in some manner) plus the controller was said to list in the 10's of thousands of dollars. (20-30 K per system). Again, list price and like claims, hard to pin down.

I would love to see such a device in action but my gut says, after the magnet hoax some years back, let someone else take the risk. My personal opinion only. The claims of blowdown reduction of 20% hardly seem worth it to me. 60 percent might get my attention, but 20% sounds like a margin of error. If up or down 10 percent, what have I saved?

The other part is, biocides. How does legionella know it is supposed to die with pulsed electricity? It is not like you are strapping them into teeny tiny electric chairs or anything :)

    Kidding aside, I remain skeptical.

    Could you

report back any findings to me (directly, off line) if that is not asking too much.

Seemed too pricey for what it is, physically, and promised much for a high cost.

Your installation- is that a cooling tower, steam boiler or what? I can see no results until summer if the former, of course.

    Thanks!

    Why are the systems

that you looked at working well, but your system is not? Has anyone been checking water chemistry?

I have seen several of these working, and now a few that are not and I am trying to figure out what the variable is.

Any light on the matter would be appreciated here as well.

    Thanks,

    Henry

Yes the water is being tested. They have said that the chemistry of the make-up water has changed slightly.
