Not a hydronic question
but I won't be able to call Trane until Monday. I finished up a job where we replaced 2 heat pump systems with Trane 16 SEER heat pumps with variable speed air handlers. Nice stuff. Had to work late to finish. Upon start up one of the outdoor units would emit a high pitch whistling sound that seemed to come from the compressor. As a benchmark the other one ran beautifully and quiet. The homeowner who was hovering said right away, "I want a new unit." Great! Of course the job is far away from my normal stomping grounds. I only took it because we were a little slow. Anyone have a similar experience. Sounds a little like a spaceship sound on TV. (Maybe I should have looked up):) WW

Heat pump Noise
Could be a charge problem, if the refrigerant charge is low, the pressures may not be sufficient to fully reverse the reversing valve leaving it in a mid position causing a bypass of hot gas into the suction line. Where the pressures normal?
Also I have seen foreign contaminants get into the lines like copper shavings, Try to reverse the unit to the a/c mode and let it run for several minutes, if it is so whatever it is may get trapped in the factory dryer.
It could also be an internal relief leaking in the compressor, If that was the case, on shutdown the suction line will get hot/warm immediately after the compressor shuts off.
Were there any other symptoms?

First of all,..
Customer needs to be set at ease. At least until the problem is diagnosed and corrected. "Demanding a new unit"....??? I hate when they dictate things when there is a small problem or lack there of. Anyways', More info is needed such as pressures temps, and everything else you can think of. Is the cond fan running??? There is a bypass acting as a safety to protect the compressor. A-little more info would help. Are you sure all valves are open fully? Please help us to help you. Don't let the customer pressure you when you are working. If it bothers you to have him stand over you, politley ask this person if you could have some time to think so that you may provide him with answers as to the problem. (When I have a nice technician who is under pressure or just to nice to ask for a-little time to do his job, That's when mistakes are made.) Already you seem intemidated. Don't let it bother you.....

It was late Friday night
with the sun going down, after 4 grueling days of crawlspace work. I was to the point of turning on and checking it out so I could go home. I didn't have the energy, or the right mindset to troubleshoot right then so I put him on emergency heat and said I'll be back Monday. I will call the factory techie before I go just to get an idea of where I should look. Sometimes if there has been a problem of that sort before they can give you a heads up of what to look for. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks for the input. WW
