    customer request

We have a cust who needs a natural gas submeter to determine gas usage so he can reimburse his other partners in the office building for his apartment usage.

Anyone have a source for natural gas submeters?

    natural gas sub-meters

before you add a sub-meter to a gas system, check your local laws regarding utilities.

in massachusetts and rhode island (at least) you cannot add a sub-meter to natural gas - once you do, you in effect become a utility company.

in large (500+ units) and small (townhome) residential developments, the local gas companies provide separate meters, and bill the customers independently (no middleman)

since we use the gas company as provider and biller, i unfortunately can't offer any specific meter information.

    GrandPah,

I just checked with one of our suppliers and we have a company here in MA called King Gage that handles gas meters and the number is 1-508-482-0033.

If you are just looking for information you could try them.

    Good luck,

    Jack

    yup

Thanks Jackchips! I'll call them tomorrow.

Jim, I checked with the local gas co first. Given the circumstances, they're ok with the intended use. But, you're absolutely correct about the law (in PA) disallowing resale of public utility end use - like gas, water or electricity - by a landlord. Too much room for abuse I suppose.

Been down a few rabitt holes today in this pursuit(G). The only one I've located so far is the same bulky size as the standard house-meter. Looking for a nice compact unit.

    Red Lion Timer

Depending on what type of gas appliance and how many you have, you may be able to use a Red Lion Timer wired to the gas valve. Works great for fixed burner capacity ON-OFF gas appliances. I use them on every gas appliance. Not suitable for modulating devices.

This is a lot simpler than messsing with the gas piping.

It counts the total elapsed time when any 10 – 300 volt signal input is present. Programmable in Hours, Minutes, Seconds or whatever. I prefer hundredths of a hour. Time x Burner Capacity = Gas Consumption.

I am using: Red Lion Model CUB7T100 Programmable Timer, Positive Image Reflective, 10 – 300 volt signal input.
