hot water heater

in THE MAIN WALL
i have an old steam furnace/hot water heater. last night & today, the hot water tank was filling automatically w/o having the valve opened. what could be the cause of this problem?

    Could be a bad valve...

    Do you have a steam system with a steam boiler.Next to the boiler is a tank on a stand which supplies hot water ,which gets heated from the steam boiler from a set of pipes? If so you have a old hot water generator , with a worn out gate valve allowing a gravity flow... Happens to old $&?#..
