Steamhead, thanks for the information. Mains and Dry returns are insulated. Still have some elbows and other fittings to do.

    Main Vent Replacement Sizing

First I would like to thank everyone that has contributed their expertise and help to the wall. Between the archives, and We Got Steam Heat!, I have learned so much about my home single pipe steam system. Thanks again!

I hope someone can help me properly size and locate my main vents. Steam main #1 is 31ft of 2" pipe and 10ft of 1" pipe (dry return). Main #2 is 27ft of 2" pipe and 27ft of 1" pipe (dry return). Both main vents are at the end of their respective returns on appx. 8" risers, and neither pass much air. Is this the right location for the mains? What should I use to replace the mains? Thanks in advance.

    Two

Gorton #1 or Hoffman #75 vents per main, for a total of four vents, should work fine. The dry return vent placement is a second choice, I prefer putting them at the end of the mains. But if you insulate the dry returns you shouldn't lose much heat from them.
